More from Haleakala

Here are some more shots from my sunrise at the top of Haleakala in Maui. One challenge was trying to compose for the light and clouds pre-dawn while having no idea at all what was in the foreground inside the crater. As the morning got brighter, that got a lot easier.

As always, any thoughts are welcome

1) Early twilight with the crescent moon in the sky

2) Sunburst over the crater (the nearby foreground was a mess, so cropping was the answer)

3) A portrait view that looked like Mars to me

4) From another viewpoint - I liked the juxtaposition of the foreground spires with the crater behind them

Very nice set 2nd and 3rd are my favorites. I was there about 25 years ago with a film camera and no tripod. I remember how neat a place this is, but have no good images to show for it.

Thanks for the psych. I wanted to get up there last time I was there, but the weather didn't cooperate. For sure next time. I like 'em all, but the last one stands out for me.

Where were you staying and what time did you leave to drive up? What if anything would you do different next time?

We stayed just north of Ka'anapali. We left at 4am for a 6:40 sunrise. I'd be tempted to leave half an hour earlier if I did it again. The railing along the main viewpoint was full when I arrived.

So we walked a little ways up the sliding sands trail until we had a clear view. Turned out we had a spot to ourselves. Doing it again I'd either keep going down the trail to the spot I found in the third image (better foregrounds) or just head for that fourth image spot (Kalahaku overlook) which has a better view of some of the cinder cones.

Incredible views from up there. #2 and #3 are the ones that really stand out for y eyes. Then only thing wrong with the first one and the last are that they are posted right next to #2 ad #3 :)

Killer second image.

These are great images, I really like the first especially, the negative space really makes it for me, and gives the (accurate) impression that you are in the sky above the clouds.

A minor C&C.. I would pull back the saturation on these a bit, the first two moreso
