So, my last stop on my visit to France, was to the very small village of Belleau France which is about 1 ½ hours south of Paris (in the middle of nowhere) and was the main purpose for visiting France on my way home from Scotland.
During WW1 in 1918 the US engaged the Germans in the area called Belleau Woods. The area is divided up into 3 mamin sections, 1st the Cemetery/Battle Field, 2nd the US Memorial and lastly the Village of Belleau, where the famous Devil Dog fountian is located on private property. All are within a few miles of each other but too far to walk from one place to the other.
History: The US forces that took place in this battle consisted of the Marines which were flanked by US Army, but the Marines were chosen to spearhead the battle attacking the German forces that were entrenched in the woods.
The battle was so intense the Marines ended up fighting hand to hand with bayonets to win the battle.
They fought so fiercely the German High Command called the Marines “Teufelshunde” or Devil Dogs, and the name stuck to this day

The Cemetery was immaculate, this 1st image was the onsite chapel with my wife shown to show its scale.

Inside the Chaple .
On the all 4 walls are carved with the names of service members who lost there lives during the battle but whose remains were never found which totaled over 1000 men
