Got a Chance to License This

I got an email today that Theodore Roosevelt NP wants to license one of my timelapses I captured there a couple of years ago. That's pretty cool to hear.

I haven't licensed any of my photography in quite a few years. If anyone has thoughts on it, or links to forms, that would be great. I am not sure if I do just a one time licensing fee, or go for a yearly license? And how much.

So all thoughts are appreciated.

Here is a link to that particular timelapse they want. As usual, please click Watch on YouTube, and then also click the Like button and leave a comment there on YouTube as well. It would be appreciated. :)

Congratulations! Can't say I have any useful thoughts on the specifics of the licensing deal beyond wishing you luck.

BTW - neat timelapse.

I’ve done a little bit of that. If you find the right person there, ask what they intend to do with it and try and base your contract around that. If they are going to be marketing it or somehow generating income from it, you need to know that and price it accordingly. If not, it just may end up in a static display or on their website. I have a no fee policy for non-commercial use of my work for State Parks, National Parks, some nonprofits, etc.

Very cool, Jim! I agree with Jeffrey regarding whether or not it will be generating income. If you do an annual fee, then you'll have to monitor & see if they're still using it each year. You'll also want to be sure that you're credited (that shouldn't even have to be said). And keep in mind that NPS has had it's budget slashed......

Hey Jeffrey, thanks!

And thanks for the info. It's for a company that's building a multimedia display for the new museum up there that opens July 1st. So since it's not directly for the NP, but a company that's getting paid by the NP, I wouldn't mind making a little bit of money off of it.

Thanks Monika. Yeah, it's sad that all of the revenue that the NP's generate are not going back into the NP's. But that's another discussion.

I answered your question or thoughts in my reply to Jeffrey. It is a 3rd party that's getting paid by the NP to install Multimedia displays, so the timelapse would be running on one of the displays in the museum.

And you should. It seems like a one use request. I would think something in the $500-$1000 range would be adequate.
