A Poor Man's Badwater

Along the I-15 West of Baker in California there is an abandoned water park in the middle of the desert. It's covered in graffiti and a fun place to photograph. This isn't that, but on the way to my driving to it at sunset last night I saw this abandoned gas station, so I stopped to photograph it.

As soon as I walked up to it, I saw the patterns in the ground that immediately reminded me of the salt hexagons from Badwater Basin in Death Valley.

iPhone 17 Pro as I am in the road.

Looks like a movie set from the next Mad Max movie 🤪 😄 Really cool capture, and I see the resemblance with the ground patterns for sure.

This is some serious serendipity with the dead grass polygons anchoring the spray can paints jobs in front of a nice sunset.

Interesting/colorful old gas station. Nice combination of colors & lines with the grass polygons (wonder what created them, as I'm sure it's not thermokarst in the desert) and sunset colors. Great find, Jim!

Thanks Monika! Yeah, with the patterns I was thinking maybe it's asphalt or concrete broken and then covered with dirt? Not sure.
