Dug Bar in Hells Canyon

Accessed via the number one backcountry drive in Oregon (Oregon Byways, Bernstein), Dug Bar on the Snake River is a special place. You need a high clearance vehicle, 4x4 was not needed when we went in May. A simply beautiful drive from start to finish, we took over 2 hours to travel the final 30 miles from Imnaha. We camped there one night but later wished we had stayed longer, it's definitely on my must-revisit-again list!

Beautiful scenes from a place I would like to visit.

I wondered what was at the end of that road out of Imnaha but the signs next to where the road heads out of town made it clear my old 25' RV had no business leaving the pavement. I stayed in Joseph for a few days and Imnaha was one of many side trips in the area. Definitely worth a revisit with my 4x4 next time.

Wow Michael, that's an area I haven't heard of. It sure is super cool! No wonder you regretted not staying a 2nd night.

Great job with the photos, they look really great. Sharp, crisp and perfect color.

The road is tight in places, a full size pickup is the largest rig I would take here. There are a few blind curves, one in particular just before reaching the Snake River that I had to scout before attempting, but it was not as bad as it first appeared. Truly, the ride out was just as gorgeous as the final destination. You won't regret making the effort to get there! Be sure to stop at the "store" in Imnaha, there is a signup sheet inside for the rattlesnake and bear roundup contest for kids! Snakes must have head removed to be considered in final judgement!

Thanks Jim. I think May is the best time to be there. I am already making plans for next year to go back.
