Thursday’s Task

Thursday’s Task: We conclude our trip around the compass by traveling SOUTH in pursuit of landscape images—one mile or over a thousand miles. My examples below:

John, this is a nice set of shots.

I have not been to Organ Pipe NM, just wonder if the area is easy to reach with regular AWD or 4x4s ? How is the road condition in the winter?

We traveled in the fall 2019 did not drive “off-road”—don’t know if that’s even permissible. Driving my FJ Cruiser we encountered no problems navigating to the different viewpoints. As far as winter driving, I found this on-line:

Winter
Mild days and cool nights arrive in November and last through January. Temperatures in December and January may fluctuate drastically day to day, from high 60's to low 50's during the day, and low 40's to below freezing at night. Mid-December through January brings cool winter rains, rejuvenating the landscape and bringing water for spring flowers.

Wow! That’s SOUTH! Thank you for sharing these beautiful images.Your first two “snowscapes” are my favorites—and I really enjoyed seeing the penguins, near and far.

I think Jeffrey wins any competition for how far south

Mine are considerably closer to home starting out with one from the Portland Japanese Garden:



A bt farther south is a scene from the Sweet Creek Trail near Florence Oregon:



A sunset at Harris Beach State Park near the Oregon/California border:



Finally a late day shot of the Watchman in Zion National Park:

Alan, an excellent series you’ve shared—I especially love the Zion capture, beautiful light and the Harris Beach sunset with its gorgeous colors. Thank you for sharing!

Craig, five beautiful landscapes from your “South.” My favorites are “Mystery Canyon” and “Way South Utah”—great images…and oft-repeated, I love your titles as well. “Up on Top” and “The Comb” are especially interesting in their unique compositions. Thank you for sharing!

Doug, gorgeous colorful images from your “South” series—the Organ Pipe and Anza Borrego images are particularly colorful with such beautiful foregrounds. My favorite however is the Gypsum Dunes image with its perfect symmetry.

One of John's images from Down South was from Organ Pipe National Monument and it reminded me that I had captured at sunrise a month ago as I had gone down there to capture the Milky Way. Mine is much much wider, so John's is the better image I think of the double arch. But mine might add some perspective to the scene for those who haven't been there.

Kyle, two exceptional images from your “South”—and mine as well! The reflection of the Botswana landscape doubles the beauty of this colorful image—very nice! My favorite is the Milford Sound image with the strong foreground composition leading to the mountains and their reflection beyond.

Larry, very nice Saguaro images—I especially favor the first image’s composition, but the last image in that group is interesting for the juxtaposition of cactus “green” with the mountains of “faded blue” beyond. I love the New Zealand waterfall in B&W—my favorite of your “South” collection.
