Mushroom Rock sunrise

Hard to choose but I think I lean a bit towards the horizontal with more of a top to bottom color show. The vertical doesn't quite have the same zing at the very top and the very bottom. I would be very happy to have shot either of these.

What an interesting choice Stephen! Both are really awesome, I am not sure there needs to be a choice here as the clouds are a bit different and the vertical presents a lot of elements that the horizontal doesn't. But I would say #1 by a nose over #2.

This morning's sunrise from "Mushroom Rock" in Highlands, NC. I was pretty happy I got up and hiked to this location today.... Horizontal or vertical?

Stephen, both are beautiful pictures.

Composition-wise, the vertical one is more my cup of tea. In this particular scene, I find the verticle framing gives more depth of field, the foreground trees counterbalance the brilliant red clouds in the sky.

I am in on #1, but it is a case of whichever one you saw you would like, and so #1 is just a hair above the vertical treatment in #2 for me. Great colors and and sky, with the framing and focus really adding that feeling of depth.
