    Orphan Mesa

Thanks Alan. It does resemble the Cliff Dwellers area to me also. One of these days I hope to make it to Casa Blanca which is also nearby!

    Orphan Mesa

This red rock area is just across from Abiquiu Lake in Northern New Mexico. A fine place to watch the clouds drift by on a September day.

    Miss Alabama

If only those instagrammers would confine their "work" to this one rock, then move on, mission accomplished. I think the artist(s) chose this rock because it has a pullout right in front of it, so many people stop here for a photo. It does attract attention from all passers by.

    Oregon's Hoodoo Valley

Thanks guys! I should add that if you go there be warned - the hoodoos are on a hill which is much steeper than it appears in this image. It was very awkward to work them at close range even with a tripod because of the steep hill and the soft volcanic sand underfoot. Be careful!

    Miss Alabama

"Miss Alabama," also frequently referred to as Nightmare Rock or Lady Face Rock, is a painted rock formation near the entrance to the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California. Since the 1980s, visitors have been transforming this natural granite boulder with paint. Currently, the quirky landmark...

    Waterfall Wednesday 7/15/2026

This is Lower Lewis Falls in Washington State. Right beside the parking lot, these Falls are very popular on a hot summer day.

No more free lunch at Vista House

Thanks Trent. Generally, at 7 seven minutes you see much more streaking in the clouds. This must have been the least windy day ever in the Gorge!

    Moonlit Hills

Cool scene! And bright enough that the stars aren't streaks.

    Oregon's Hoodoo Valley

Thanks Alan. It's not a secret location or even hard to get to, it's on the edge of Lake Billy Chinook in Central Oregon.

    Oregon's Hoodoo Valley

You don't expect to see hoodoos in Oregon, yet here they are. 850nm converted Nikon DSLR.

No more free lunch at Vista House

Thanks Alan. It was 435 seconds of exposure. I have never seen clouds that just refused to move as these did. The scene appeared much darker than it shows here, as early as it was. Yes, USFS yearly passes will work. There were no passes on sale - just a placard with a QR code to scan and pay...

No more free lunch at Vista House

I have been in the habit of stopping at Vista House to check out the view most every trip to the Gorge I take. Just a half hour from my doorstep, it was the unofficial start of the waterfall touring route and an obligatory photo op. Now it costs $10 to stop and snap a photo or $12 if you're from...

The Orange Cliffs + 1 new image

I have never seen that much green in Canyonlands! An infrared image from then would have been epic!

    Wetland

I have to disagree with Alan about the clouds - they are blown out and lacking detail here. Maybe you can recover them in post if you shot RAW. These are good conditions for a 720 conversion, love the black sky!
