iPhone 11Pro Night Mode

I had read about Night Mode on iPhone cameras but had never pulled mine out to see how well it worked in the dark. While I was waiting for the sunrise this morning I decided that the moonset was a good target to test this out with. I was using a headlamp to set up my DSLR to give you an idea of how dark it was and most of my DSLR shots were 30s even with ISO set to 800 when I took this shot. In this case a small timer appeared on the iPhone screen showing a 3 second window during which it was apparently taking multiple images that it averages into the final shot. No way a single 3 second shot handheld would be anything other than a blur otherwise. I did steady my iPhone on top of my camera (on a tripod) just to make sure it would stay sharp.

The rendering software did make the sand down in front a bit brighter than the rocks and the water behind but I have no idea how the software is making decisions like that. I do have a very similar shot using my DSLR and the brightened foreground was not present.

I also have an app for my iPhone that does something similar for moving water to create what looks like a long shutter open to smooth the water but I have seen quite a few artifacts in the few handheld shots I have taken using that app.
