The Recipe #17 - Long Focal Length

One of my favorite lenses is a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L and there are times when I add on a 2x extender for those occasions where 400mm just isn't enough. I was playing around in our back yard one day trying out what I could do with 800mm. 1/200 @ f/11 ISO 800

Very good Alan, that's amazing, I use a 1.4 x on mine, but not a 2x.
I wouldn't mind having a 1.4x these days - I would be able to use auto-focus with my 100-400 using that with my 5D Mk IV. The 2.0x has always been manual focus and yes this image was manual focus.

This is really pretty sharp for using a 2x converter. I think a 1.4x or as Nikon as a 1.7x is preferable if for no other reason then still being able to autofocus. So extra good work to be manually focusing this one.

One of the reasons for my experiments with the extender and 400mm combination was to see how much DoF you could get since this was shot from a distance at f/11. There is actually a pretty wide DoF window with this lens choice which means I basically focused once on the flowers and then just continued shooting when the bee arrived. This was not a hand held shot. No way you can get this kind of DoF with a shorter lens combination or especially a macro lens.
