Factory Butte Wildflower Pano

As Ben explained when we woke up for sunrise, there was no clouds at all at Skyline Overlook. One of the great things about Skyline is we can see Factory Butte from there. We saw that there was some light clouds forming around it and we knew no matter what we had a lot of wildflowers we could work into a scene. So we drove the 5 minutes to get there and set up to shoot.

I will say right off the bat, that I like Ben's photo he posted way more then mine. I really like how he got the wildflowers positioned in his. I was trying to include the cracked desert floor along with the flowers and that may have been my undoing. The timing of this was just as the sun was hitting the tops of the buttes, I liked that transition from sunlight to shadow.

This is still pretty wide and large, I haven't come up with a final cropping, so any suggestions, feel free to download and crop away to demonstrate. I am linking the photo from the Gallery since it's wider then normal, though still probably not big enough.

Hey jim this is pretty sweet. I know a pano suffers at web size. Did you focus stack? I am not sure I would crop the butte is Peru placed and you need that bottom row of flowers. Maybe a bit off the left

Thanks Ben. I didn’t focus stack. I have to double check but I think this was about 40mm on my 24-120mm. My idea was to be able to come in tighter on those front flowers but still maintain hyperfocal distance. The focus was fine, but I didn’t get the flowers as big in the front like I would have liked too.

Did you focus stack on yours?

I did do a vertical of Factory Butte that I hope will show larger flowers, but I still have to process that.

As to the crop, I had a similar thought with losing some off the left.

Colors are so pleasing here. I could feel the wonderful air temperature this time of day, and the clean air full of the flower aromas.

I like the larger sized version of this shot. The bits of clouds you did get have very pleasing colors to complement the first rays of the morning sun. Not sure I have good suggestions for crops on this as I think the cracked desert floor around the flowers is an interesting contrast in textures.

No Jim, I did not focus stack. I have had poor results with it and usually just use hyperfocal and stop down.

You should have come! Craig would know better, but it’s the most wildflowers I have ever seen there.
