16th October a promising forecast and no other commitments so a 1hr drive to check on the Autumn colours. Our usual peak is the first week of November but as I type this we have a storm with gusts to 80mph with another forecast for Tuesday. Scotland is somewhat worse with stronger winds and 3 storms in a week. Since I hadn't hiked up Castle Crag for a couple of years this was my destination.
The central hill is Castle Crag a volcanic plug just under 1,000ft, this image from 15th Oct 2018. This valley (Borrowdale) is a temperate rain forest and any day when it isn't raining is a bonus
On my walk the light was often stunningshowing the golden brown bracken and the mostly green trees
The next 3 images are from the very top of the hill. The crepuscular rays have rainbows in them as a shower comes towards me. I initially thought that this was a form of moire but is not or I don't have the skills to remove it. I wish it wasn't present but I can't remove it.
Looking slightly to the left into upper Borrowdale a green oasis set in the bracken and heather fells. The furthest part of this valley is the wettest place in England with 160-180" of rain a year
Looking North from the same location as another shower goes through. Derwentwater in the distance and Skiddaw with the rainbow starting to arc over it. I can see the back of Skiddaw from my house
Back down into the car, 6 miles and I was shattered, perhaps I shouldn't have taken my heavy tripod and 100-400mm lens. Ken
