St Elmo was a booming mining town in the 1880's, but the decline in silver prices and lower quality gold ore put the city in decline 1920 and it became a ghost town in 1958 when the last family left. I visited St Elmo in about 1975 and it was not a ghost town as several businesses were in operation. Reconstruction of the buildings was started in about 1980 and the city was classified as a heritage site and received Colorado Historical Funds to aid in the preservation of the remaining buildings. My wife and I made a trip to St Elmo this past weekend, and found a lot more people in the town then I had seen nearly 50 years ago. If you are in the area I would highly suggest drive up to St Elmo, I think you will find the drive is through beautiful mountain country and the city very interesting!
