Saint Elmo Heritage Site

St Elmo was a booming mining town in the 1880's, but the decline in silver prices and lower quality gold ore put the city in decline 1920 and it became a ghost town in 1958 when the last family left. I visited St Elmo in about 1975 and it was not a ghost town as several businesses were in operation. Reconstruction of the buildings was started in about 1980 and the city was classified as a heritage site and received Colorado Historical Funds to aid in the preservation of the remaining buildings. My wife and I made a trip to St Elmo this past weekend, and found a lot more people in the town then I had seen nearly 50 years ago. If you are in the area I would highly suggest drive up to St Elmo, I think you will find the drive is through beautiful mountain country and the city very interesting! ;)

Looks like a good place to open a paint store :) Are people actually living in the places you have featured in the last two images? The first image has some structures on the far right that appear to be a bit more modernized than the rest.

This is in much better shape than Body CA.

Hey Larry, What a great looking town! It's one that I haven't been to yet, though I have heard of it. But after seeing your photos, I am making a trip up there in July when I get back to Colorado!

You did great! Post some more photos of this town when you get a chance.

Thanks Jim it is worth the drive to visit St Elmo. The drive in is through very beautiful alpine country and the city of St Elmo is ripe with mining history! ;)

I will post some more images later this weekend! :)

Nice. well suited for shooting western movies.
Thanks for your comments murali, appreciated! ;)

It might not work as a western movie setting as it sits at over 10,000 feet elevation and has steep trail in and out of town! :)
