I have been to Grandview point many times, but I only hiked to the far viewpoint once in mid morning. This time I went out for sunset and was not disapointed.

CC welcome

Edit to add a cople reworks. I patched the sky using a darker image, then I used that rework to make a 24x42 crop to uncenter the horizon

Hey Ben,

You got some cool stuff going on in those clouds, it almost looks like rain in those clouds back there. I like the clouds towards the right being lit up with that golden color. I think though that the blown area on right side horizon is a bit troublesome. You made a good attempt to rescue the blown out area, but perhaps you thought while shooting that you would be able to recover more? Or do you have this same shot where there was more detail captured?

Was the sun just blowing out that area? Sometimes it can just be plain hard if the sun drops out of the clouds and there is a huge area open where it then is just so bright. If you can't recover more in that area, I would visually try another approach, and that would be clone out those bits of partial clouds in it and just let the whole area be blown out. That way you are not teasing the viewer with the idea that there was more detail there, so visually they are not feeling like they are missing something. Not sure if that would help, but I would try that if it was mine just to see.

Awesome scene and light! Jim had some good thoughts about the blown out area. I'd be tempted to crop some off the top as well to get the horizon out of the middle.

I have darker shots, I will see how they do, I was ok with the bright area so I left it, but always good to see what others think.

Thanks Kyle, this is a 3 frame stich, trying for enough pixels to print 30x45 so I had to use a level camera which almosr always produces a centered horizon. I could crop right and top and solve two issues at one time, but woul dthen center the large feature in the middle.

Nice view, colors, and sky. I'm not sure where this is! I'm afraid you do need to address that bright area of sky.

Hi Jeffrey. Its at the end of the Island in the Sky road in Canyonlands, then a one mile hike. I am looking at my option for that sky. Trying some different methods that avoid a heavy crop.

Hey Ben, I like that you got more detail, but I don't like that the recovered highlights are now grayish and not yellow/gold.

Maybe a some dodging with a bright, pale yellow brush. May seem weird to dodge a bright area, but it would ensure some color in the area.

I like the crop. Keeps the best parts of the image in mind.

Yes Jim, I did not like it much either. In fact, when I print the original it has some color in that area and teh whispy clouds come out ok. Just don't know what to do for web posting.

Thanks Kyle, I will give it a try.

This may be one where it looks better in print then on the web for that reason.

I started over this morning from scratch. To use all my brackets, it takes 15 50mp files so its a chore. Then I blended the stitches. I think it's going to work, but I have some artifacts that I need to work out. Those clouds are grey to start with and probably need to stay that way, also some of the sky is around 250/25/250, not blown, but not very nice. But the dark version reduces teh extent.

If this ever works, I will repost it. But I am not giving up yet.

Ok, here is my latest rework, and now that I have the sky tamed, I was able to go wider and crop for 24x48.

I really appreciate the help here, I was almost ready to print and now I like this much better.

Hey Ben, I can’t wait to get home and view this in better detail, but from what I see here this looks great!

Thanks Jim, 24x48 at 300ppi native will have lots of detail and smooth gradations. I will print it at home on the same paper at a small size to assure it is not too dark. But otherwise it's probably good to go.
