CFX reader oddball ports

Got my CFX card today, but the Sandisk reader has some sort of oddball connector that probably a new fangled USB but for which my computer lacks any matching port.

I suspect I can get an adaptor that takes it from USB old style to USB oddball. But I have no idea what the real name of this connector is. Anyone know?

USB C is the new standard. You can buy them everywhere. I wouldn’t get an adapter, Just get a USB C cable.

I need a USB old to plug into my computer so it needs C on one end and old on the other. The reader already came with a C to c cable.

I used to work in an industry that always struggled with backward compatibility so this is partly just a rant.

Do any of your USB ports have a blue tab in them instead of black? This would indicate a USB 3.x port which is much faster than the older USB technology. If you do have the blue tab then a USB-A to USB-C adapter cable would work well and give you full USB 3.x speeds.

If all of the existing USB ports have black tabs then Jim's suggestion of a PCI card would work if your computer can handle the bus speeds necessary for USB-C. Do check before taking this route - not all motherboards can handle the necessary data rates for a USB 3.x PCI card. Most newer motherboards should have the capability to handle USB 3.x.

I have a high end custom built computer that is 4 years old. And it does have USB 3x in a couple places that are required for my printer and some other deal.

I could have a PCI card installed I am sure.

Or just go ahead and use an adapter cable. You will get full USB 3x speeds from your CFX card reader. I'm not sure the CFX card reader can really transmit faster than USB 3x anyway.

Most CF Express cards advertise 1480 MB/s write and 1700 MB/s read. USB 3.0 is 625 MB/s. USB 3.1 is twice that. So if you have USB 3.1 you get close to the CFE speed. If you don't care about speed ...
