Canon EF to RF adaptors

There are basically 4 kinds of adaptors for EF to RF in the Canon line. Here is a breakdown.

  • Plain adaptor, $99 back ordered
  • Control ring adaptor $199 back ordered.
  • Drop in filter polarizer adaptor, $299 in stock.
  • Drop in filter variable ND grad $399 back ordered.
Also consider
Clear drop in filter for either drop in filter mount. $129 back ordered.

I have the Drop in polarizer filter version, but need a clear glass filter to use in situations where I don’t want the polarizer. I considered just getting the plain adaptor but if I leave the adaptor on the camera all the time, it protects the sensor during lens changes. On the other hand I have always avoided using any unnecessary glass. Even most 3rd party adaptors are out of stock.

I have the control ring and the polarizer. I've had the same thoughts as you, but the clear filter is so expensive that I'd rather just change to the control ring adapter when I don't want the polarizer. I see the breakthrough is selling filters for the filter adapter. I may give one of those a try.

How useful is the control ring adapter and what control do most people use it for?

Ideally I would get the Drop in Polarizer adapter and get any 3rd party filters that can be used in place of the polarizer. Not sure how good Canon's polarizer is in terms of color neutrality. I have and use the Breakthrough ones and really like it. If I can I'd even replace the polarizer. Getting both a clear as well as ND ones to fit into the holder is the way I'd go give the option.

I took a look at Breakthrough and it seems they are also backordered. They have a clear 2x and 4x whatever that means. But I will keep them in mind if I need a ND filter although I have one now for end of lens. I just went ahead and ordered a standard adaptor with a 4-6 week wait, I wonder in that also represents the wait for the camera? If I miss fall season I might have been better off waiting until spring to order the camera.

There is a pretty good demand for the cameras and the accessories and the supply chain is affected by the pandemic. I am personally not hopeful that I can get this in my hands in time for fall. If you want this for winter/spring, I’d suggest sticking with your order rather than canceling it. You are only charged when your order is shipped anyway.
