AI servo in one shot mode??? R5

I set my AF to one shot, but it continues to refocus if I move it around. I have AF assigned to the AF button, and I like to AF first then move the target for the purpose of exposure in a different area. But the AF will try to aquire focus even when no button is being pressed.

Also is there a way to move the target with the toggle instead of the live view screen?

Looks like a good approach is to use AE lock to first set the exposure point and lock it in, then move the target for focus.

My approach (assuming a tripod shot) has been to frame my composition in the viewfinder, turn on LiveView and use the touch screen to determine my exposure info and then tap the screen where I want my focus point. In spite of using Live View more than a little bit I still compose my images using the viewfinder. I find it much easier to find my exposure info and focus point using Live View.

Ben, check if your continuous focus is set. I am not near my camera so not sure where it is. I set my AF-On to AF and * for AE. I use the joystick in combination of the button next to the * button to select the focus point. I set my focus first and exposure after. Both are done after I get my composition nailed.

I have already forgotten my 5DSR but I don't think it had touch screen. Anyway, I sometimes can't see in live view because of glare so I prefer to use the viewfinder and move the target with the joy stick.

Continuouse focus is disabled but it still focuses continuously. I have been testing this by pointing at different places, I should test it from a tripod when the camera is not moving, just the target.

Not sure how you are getting the joystick to move the target. How do you enable that feature.

Set the AF to single point AF not AI Servo to enable moving that point using the joystick.

It is in single point. I also tried a tripod shot with continuous focus disabled and it still re focuses. I did use the AE lock and that worked fine

Ok, you turn on the joystick in the last menu for customize buttons. It is either on or off, the default seems to be off. I turned it on and it now controls the target as desired.

I still have not found a way to make the camera stop focusing in response to a moving target short of putting it in manual focus). I am thinking about resetting the camera.

Ben,

As an R5 user I can say that that behavior does not sound right. It does still seem to be acting like the Continuous AF option (located in AF Menu 1, 5th item down in the list) is set. What firmware are you at? Not imagining that to be the issue, but worth a question. There is a new firmware that just dropped for the R5 - I plan to update mine sometime in the next day or 2. If nothing else fixes it and there is just no explanation for the behavior that is something you could also try. The newest version just announced in 1.40 I believe.

Feel free to contact me directly (either via PM or phone) and lets see if we can get your issue sorted out...

Mike, thanks for the reply. I have figured out a new work flow that solves the issue. First I have the af location assigned to the joystick, this seems to solve the issues.

OK. Well it sounds strange to me. I have back button focus enabled, but I am sure it wasn't exhibiting that behavior even before that. It DID exhibit that behavior when I turned on continuous AF, which I promptly then turned back off. I have the AF position also assigned to the joystick, although originally it was using the finger on the display method to move it around and I still did not see the issue you seem to be describing.

In any case, glad you have it worked to your satisfaction.

To tell the truth, as soon as it started doing what I wanted it to do, I promptly forgot the details of how I got there. I recall turning off continuous AF and setting the joystick to control AF point. I do use continuous AF is some modes, so I may have had an issue of which mode I was in.

Ben,

Sure that makes sense. It is a great camera, but there is a reason the Advanced User Guide is ~919 pages long :D LOTS of configurable settings to fool with (and muck up - I have done that myself for sure :) )

I have mine set up in a pretty good way using the Custom modes to handle wildlife and then my trusty Av mode or sometimes Manual mode for scenic stuff and nightscape. But there are still a few things that I think might be able to be optimized that I still need to twiddle with at some point.

All my lens are AF now and what a fantastic AF it is. I don’t need to pre focus for mw shots. Exposure and DR are so good that bracketing is unusual. All but one lens (100-400) are native mount. I have 15 to 800 covered

Any chance you are using one of the "C" modes in the camera? It might have been saved with continuous AF and you may not realize that switching to that mode turns it back on. Just guessing...

I use the c modes all the time. I started out checking and resetting them I probably got it fixed without knowing what I did

I ran into a similar problem with the c-modes. I have C1 setup for wildlife, but I hadn't specified "animal" for the preferred eye detect. In fact I hadn't realized that was an option until a friend showed me and I was missing focus more than I should have. I made the change and it worked great. But of course the next time I turned my camera off and on the C1 mode reset to its saved settings. I had to switch to C1, change the preference to "animal", and then save it back to C1 before it would stick. That's why I was wondering if you had something similar going on with continuous AF.

I do what you do, I resave after making a correction but I wonder if the C mode is losing some settings, or maybe some are global and not saved under the C mode?
