This is a scenic road in Door County, WI along route 42 near Gills Rock. It is probably photographed as often as Yosemite by the folks that live here and those that visit every fall.

Oh my - a twisty road to die for :D

I would be torn between enjoying the turns and enjoying the scenery.

How do you think your RV would handle this road, Alan? I'll bet you could straighten this one out

I doubt most folks would want to try to follow me through those turns no matter what I was driving but my top choice would have been my old Honda S2000 track car. Top down of course to appreciate the leaves :D

Gorgeous, Doug - and that's quite the twisty road! One of our longtime patients had a family property in Door County that he went back to annually. I never knew anything about it. Now at least I have 1 image to associate with it.

That would be a blast on a motorcycle! Any idea why it was constructed like that?

Nice image Doug. I have to wonder what the crew that laid out that road was thinking. With no obvious barriers, why isn't the road straight through the forest? Were they just having fun? Speed control, perhaps?

Back in the old days roads were intentionally designed with beauty in mind.
The engineers knew what they had. Now it's full straight speed ahead, bulldoze anything in the way...

Wisconsin has so many cool roads, like tunnels through the trees...
And around every corner there would be a tiny bar with an Old Style sign...

A landscape architect by the name of Jens Jensen designed this road this way to force travelers to slow down and enjoy the scenery

Thanks Jeffrey. Jens Jensen, a landscape architect and one of the founders of The Ridges Sanctuary in Door County, designed it this way to force travelers to enjoy the scenery.

Bingo, Craig. That's exactly why it was designed that way. See replies to Jim Dockery and Jeffrey.

Thanks for your kind comment, Monika. While living in Illinois I used to spend some time each year in Door County and fell in love with The Ridges Sanctuary which is a Wisconsin Land Trust with nearly five hundred different species of plants including many rare orchids. I eventually wrote a book about this wonderful place called "The Ridges Sanctuary: An Intimate View." A new Visitor Center was built in 2015 which used my images for 8' by 10' murals on the walls and many other images in the displays. I continue to return each year and will be going back there in early June this year.

That may work. On the other hand, driving that road requires more attention and keeping your eye on the road, thus potentially lessening the pleasure for the driver. But the passengers get the benefit!
