It's Wednesday again so time for another round of waterfalls.

I was shooting a nice waterfall last spring and happened to turn around and noticed the light behind illuminating the forest and decided to shoot downstream instead. Its still more falling water but from the upstream point of view :)

Pile on with your own waterfalls :)

Nice, Alan -- kind of a mind bender figuring out the direction of flow in that one!

I am still producing high contrast waterfalls, this is another one from Northern Scotland. I had left my ND filters in the car so the images were produced from multiple takes at f22 1.3s exposure. 14 for the square crop and 9 for the second. I used smart object median blending with a little from a single file merged in for the square crop and smart object mean blending with a little from a single file merged for the second image. Ken

Thanks for starting this Alan, and one of your best waterfalls. Monica, Ken, Kyle and Jim, you all have fantastic images in this series. I don't comment on threads like this as they become too long. But I always admire the other images.

Here is one of mine. The main falls at Provo River Falls last spring during a very high run off.

Its winter time, so time for some frozen falls. Upper falls at Johnston Canyon in Banff.

Good shutter speed producing lovely texture of the water in the middle

Here’s my submission. Elowah Falls in winter, and I’m super thankful to have this photo, because its going to look very different when I see it next I have a feeling.

Nice point of view for that scene.

"Going to look very different" is almost the understatement of the year :D

The falls are completely visible from I-84 now. I got caught in some slow traffic heading back towards Portland a few weeks back and was able to get a good view looking up McCord Creek - there are no trees left to impede the view up to the falls. There is no place you can stop to gawk around the area where McCord Creek goes under I-84 from what I can see but I sure would like to see more of it. At 65mph your view of that scene won't even last for a full second. I saw traffic in the right lane slowing down to below 30 and made a point of slotting in behind a truck so I could steal a longer glance.

Now I’m curious.. I’ll have to make a run out there and see if I can poke around a bit, not using the official trail of course, because that would be illegal ;) We should go! I’m sure we could find something out there interesting to shoot.

The trailhead parking area is blocked off from both directions so you can't "just happen" to pull over to the shoulder just past the freeway entrance from the trailhead and back up into the parking area either (never done that myself of course....). I am going back down to the Brookings area next week but after that I will be back up in Vancouver until after New Years. I keep staring at the maps but haven't figured out a way to get close to McCord Creek at all right now.

I had driven out there a couple months ago and the parking lot was still open, just a fence and warning signs across the trailhead. They must be experiencing a level of civil disobedience out there (which warms my heart) if they've gone through the trouble of fencing the whole thing off.

I’d really like to get in there and take another shot, composed from the exact same postion and then post the side-by-side.

I’ll do some map recon as well

    Have a boat? ;)

So, if I’m understanding you correctly, the parking lot I have labeled here with a yellow pin is fenced off now?

There is a large ad hoc prking area across the interstate I’ve marked here with a red icon, we can access the walking path from there and walk under the interstate downstream of the falls, it looks like to me anyway. What do you think?

Also, this Earth Pro imagery was definitely taken after the fire, it doesnt look too bad.. it didnt burn super hot here, it should recover fairly quickly by comparison. The areas that got nuked to mineral soil will never be the same, escpecially in our lifetimes. It’ll take a hundred years to build up that kind of duff again, literally, if not longer. McCord creek drainage has ‘some' green left in it

That's what I saw in late October. It looks like you can get to that spot you flagged from the interstate heading west.

That image shows the sight line from the freeway to the falls. That used to be pretty dense forest.

Hmm, thats the parking area for that relatively new multi-use path that parallels the interstate as well, I’m surprised they would close that off

if you zoom into that map, theres an underpass just west of that area marked in red, should be pretty easy access I would think
