I have been doing forums since about 2001. I note that most forums tend to develop a particular preference for style and post processing. A few alpha posters set the trend and after a while if you don't meet their requirements, you get sidelined.

It's hard to buck the trend unless you have a very high degree of self confidence. And even if you do, and keep posting your own style, whats the point if you are ignored?

Not the case here, we have all sorts of styles and the freedom to follow our own taste and instinct. What a great feeling of freedom this presents.

Thanks Ben for your thoughts, I hadn’t really thought about that but it’s so true. Forums always tend to get dominated by a few people and unless you fall inline, you won’t get commented on or really appreciated.

It’s a real testimony I think to the consistent core members who have allowed people to just be photographers and each can share their artwork.

I think it’s really cool that though some of our styles do vary, we still encourage each other to grow.

Thanks Ben, for thinking about this and mentioning it. It certainly helped put a smile on my face first thing this morning. :)

Well I guess it suites me! I can wake up and think, "I want to shoot film today" , or "I'm totally feeling B&W" or ....

For me, I love the fact that I can feel free with posting my photo's here (even though I have nowhere near the expertise of you all) and you all welcome me & help me grow, and I think I am getting better slowly but surely. I don't feel like I have to keep up with the Joneses & can go at my own pace & study what you all do, ask for help if needed & learn at my own pace without harsh criticism. I don't really have a style yet, but it doesn't matter, as I feel welcome to find myself.

I love it! I only feel bad I don't have enough time to go into the landscape forum and comment on all the cool stuff, well sometimes I do, but most times I can't. I really enjoy all the interesting stuff, as the forum grows the styles will become even MORE diverse as well. :)

what i like most is that we're not seeing the same nearly identical photos over and over again from different people. i can usually identify who the photographer is based on the photo.

There is a real sense of community here and I think that, in large part, it is due to the types of people Jim recruited for this site. I know that on other sites I wouldn't feel comfortable posting geology images and providing some of the background about the images. I have always felt that on other sites the people are too concerned with one-upping someone else and trying to raise themselves up in the hierarchy by being obsequious to the dominant ones rather then being genuine.

Thank you, Jim and to all of the rest of you here who make this feel like home. And an especially large thank you to Ben for posting your thoughts.

I agree, Jim started a good community here, with good vibe and pleasant, intelligent people(well maybe except one :D), its nice to be a part of this.
I wish i had more time for this.
My only suggestion is to be more specific when posting, if poster is interested in C&C it would be nice if he/she would specify that.
Otherwise it's either back patting or moving on to the next post, which kinda looses the purpose of the photography forum and resources.

    Great light to you.
    Cheers.

I also wish I had more time to hang around here ... It's a relatively small community, but that's a good thing. In large forums, individual people and posts get drowned in the sheer mass of it all. Not the case here.

Dave, I am really glad you are here, and I am glad you have such a love for Street Photography. Hopefully we can get a few more people interested in it, in the mean time I really enjoy the variety of Street Stuff(TM) you post here.

Pepper, now that is so true now that you mention it. The variety here is awesome.

And thank you for so quickly being a very important part of FocalWorld. I really appreciated how from day 1 when you joined you jumped in with both feet. I like the splash you made, and look forward to your continued support of the forum in the future. :)

how do you know if a place is worth staying or not unless you get your hands dirty? i guess i'll stick around - so long as we get time off for good behavior and traveling. ;)

I think that the family/community feel makes it so that people aren't posting just for greatest number of "likes". The fact that there is openness for other than just 5* photos (Historical, Travelogue, Sit & Chat, Critiques, etc) contributes hugely. In a lot of the big sites, there is only 1 processing style that garners lots of "likes" and that limits not only the site, but the photographic community as a whole. Jim, you've created a very special place, thank you.

Glad so many of you have shared your thoughts here. I have had one other thought.

I had been thoroughly indoctrinated into a certain style of landscape and a lesser extent bird photography. But I now find myself working outside that mold. I realize there are good images outside golden hour, and not all images need to be screaming with color. I will probably always lean that way, but I am slowly finding satisfaction with other scenes.

My personality does not lend itself to street or abstract or B&W, but I can certainly appreciate these styles and will look at every image and if I can find a worthy comment I will leave one. But I hope I never leave a snarky one. If I fail to comment on your image, it does not mean it's bad, just that I am too dense to "get it". :(
