In Sept 2018, a group of us got togther in Teton National Park. We had a great time together with some really awesome conditions for photography. While some areas were still green, there was plenty of areas that were right at peak color.

So Alan, Alisa, Ben, Rick (RKIII) and myself met up there for the first official FocalWorld meetup!

First off we had dinner together at a really cool BBQ place. 71AB985F-EBA8-41BA-91F2-D53AAD38D4D3.jpeg

Another evening we had pizza at a renowned location call Pinky G’s.

Guess I will pile on here with one taken along a trip up to Hedrick Pond. We spotted some of the more colorful aspen in the area and stopped to sample what we could shoot in the grove. Jim figured out I where I had my camera aimed and managed a smile for the occasion.

Hey Hedric Pond reminds me of a funny story. Rick and I went back the next night and found a guy in there with a Dodge Charger. I was really surprised to see that car made it around the gate. He planned to spend the night.

Next morning Rick and I arrive and find another sedan parked in the drive around area. No problem, I just drove around him, but he was blocking the road. This new guy had parked and walked in.

The Dodge guy leaves first and then we left. When we got to the gate, the Dodge was high centered. Rick and I helped him get it off but he could not get all the way out until the other car was moved, neither could I at this point.

The walker got back, got in his car without a word and drove off.

I lost all of my images on Sept 23 from sunrise to about 6:30 pm. Later in the week, Ben and I backtracked and I got images from various locations visited on Sept 23. I don't have the images from Hedrick Pond, the Aspen grove(s), stops along the Gros Ventre River & the Shane cabins from Sept 23.

Oh man! That stinks Rick! Very bad news there.

Did you lose a memory card, or did the card accidentally get reformatted?

I do not know for sure but at one point, my laptop showed me a message saying it was recovering the system (or something to that effect). Also at one point, I erased the cards in my camera because I had run out of space. I did so with confidence since I thought I had a backup on laptop. Also, my camera file numbering turned over and I may have copied over something. Finally, I do not remember the chronological order of these events so I can't really do any kind of analysis.

I lost some files in a similar way last spring on Ben and my Capital Reef trip (but I did not get the "recovering" message) although not nearly as many files as the loss of this trip.

A small USB3 drive is really cheap insurance for something like this. I make a backup of whatever I just copied onto my laptop right after I download stuff from memory cards.

It depends how much you shoot, but the USB sticks are an option. I have a couple of 256gb USB sticks that only contain my finished jpg's through the years.

On a trip, I have just made sure that yes, I back up to the hard drive on my laptop and on an external drive. Small external 4tb drives are now less then $100 at Costco. But I also make sure that I have enough memory cards for my trip so that I don't delete anything from a card until I get back home and have made another backup.

Memory cards are so cheap now, a 128gb SD card is like $45 or so?

The last thing I do on trips, since I have to card slots on the camera is I change the secondary one from being the overflow card, to being the jpg card. Usually I only shoot Raw of course. But when on trips, I change it so that the main slot has Raws written to it, and the secondary has a jpg written to it. The jpgs are small enough that basically the whole trip is captured onto one card. I wouldn't want to have to edit off of a jpg, but if for some reason something happened to the Raw from a location, at least I could go back and have the jpg work from.

Yeah, that really stinks Rick, it's hard to pinpoint what happened, and it can be too easy to get messed up with the numbering and such.

As I mentioned to Alan, my suggestion for the future would be 2 things.

    1. Buy more memory cards, they are cheap. :)

    2. Use an external Hard Drive to back up on, they also are not expensive anymore.
