A lot of the land surrounding the various parcels that comprise the John Day Fossil Beds NM is private and rather thoroughly posted since there are a lot of visitors to the area. This is an example of the scenery along the Blue Basin Overlook trail that is just beyond the fences. The deposits in this area are almost identical to some of the colorful layers in the Painted Hills although they are only visible when there is no vegetation. Most of the visible tracks are from the cattle being grazed on this acreage.

    C&C always welcome.

This is a very different look for this place.

A nice view you found there Alan. It would be awesome if they could fill in the gaps of the park. Though I guess if I owned that land, I wouldn't want to give it up either.

The gaps in this "park" are not small. The Painted Hills are an hours drive from where this shot was taken and the Clarno Unit is 65 miles to the north. Almost everything in between the units of the park has been private land since the 1800's. The state of Oregon bought the parcels of land with the intent to protect the fossil resources and ultimately donated the parcels to the NPS for what is now the National Monument.
