I joined Joe Kayne at Hubble Trading Post in October before we went to Farmington, NM to shoot aerial images of Shiprock. So I got to see some of his subjects and they agreed to let me photograph them. Here are two of them.

The boy's name is Zeke, a Navajo, and he made all of the garments and accessories he as wearing. He is a senior in high school and is trying to convince his tribe not to forgo their culture by traveling the reservation and giving presentations.

The girl's name is Mikaela, a Hopi. She won the miss Hopi contest two years running (2017-2018 and 2018-2019). She speaks four languages: Hopi, Navajo, Apache, and English, goes to college at Fort Lewis College and is as sweet as can be. She is wearing the traditional maiden hairdo with the "biscuits" on the side.

Neat you got an opportunity to shoot these. They look quite different from what Joe is doing with his wet plates.

This is really cool Doug. And it’s really interesting to see the difference between yours and Joe’s. Of course these look great, but the unique B&W look of Joe’s is really special.

They are indeed very impressive young people, Monika. I enjoyed talking with them and their families as much as photographing them. Mikaela's mom was miss Hopi as well when she was young. Her dad is Navajo.

Joe's work is really special and it really captures the mood of the old west.
