On my way from Bryce to Capitol Reef, driving on HWY 12, we decided to take a loop road from Escalante to Boulder. This road was originally built as a mail route to connect the two towns before HWY 12 was built. It goes north west from Escalante in a big loop, while Hwy 12 goes north east in a similar loop. I guess these large loops are required to get around this gorge shown in my images.

The road is dirt, but passable by 2wd. I think it is about 30 miles long and gets into some nice forests at its pass. This is not an especially challenging trip, nor photogenic. Many other better places in the area for your time, but if you wanted to fill out some personal knowledge of the area it’s worth a ride and it is more or less on the way if you are heading to Torrey.

This is the latest bridge, over the gorge. This is approx 2/3 of the way to Boulder.

Interesting path as I look over its route on maps. Definitely not the short way between the towns today. I have been on the first part of that road from the Boulder side many years ago in one of our old VW buses but not more than 4 or 5 miles.

Nice work Ben. This could also be in the Historical forum as there is a lot of history presented to in this. It looks like a fun area to go visit and explore.
