3 of us newly minted FW members were in this relatively locally located state park a few years ago (long before FW was a thing), and happened to catch the trees in a pretty sweet display. I have been to this location a number of times in the fall, and it almost never disappoints. It is also not always super crowded, as RMNP can tend to get. I have a number of images form this area I like, but this one is special me cause it is something different than the wider angle more expansive type of images I frequently seem to take. While I have seen lots of these types of more intimate scenes taken by others that I like very much, this is one of the few I have taken myself that I like.

    Comments and critiques welcome!

The aspen trunks here look almost pristine compared to the battered ones I am used to seeing. They steal the show in this shot.

    Alan,

Yes, the trunks are very cool, and this is a case of where I thought I was shooting the leaves, but turned out after seeing the shot on screen that I really liked how the trunks were rendered even more.

No graffiti either. Hard to find aspen trunks without love notes. This is really nice.

Thanks for the kind comments guys! This little park is about 45 minutes away from where I live and is now on my permanent visit list every fall.

    MIke,
    Beautiful.. love these scenes.
I like this the way it is and i would also like a vertical pano of an even more intamate scene of the 3 center trunks with just a little to the right of the right ones and on the left cropping of about 2/3 of what is there now. I really love the way the leaves would wrap around the one trunk that would remain on the left down low. Just a thought..

    Dean,

That's a fun idea - I will have to try that crop out. For some reason I virtually NEVER think to frame things vertically in the field. But this is a high resolution shot, so could still be a viable image cropped that way. I will try it out and then post it here...

    Alisa,

    Thanks for the kind comments!

    Dean,

Here is what I came up with from a quick crop. It ends of as an almost square image, and the 5DSr still puts over 5,000 pixels on each dimension; resized for gallery submission to ~3,000, and then of course resized again to show up in the forum post here. What do you think? I have to admit it is a nice version, and does accentuate the trunks while preserving a good swatch of color.

    Thanhks for the suggestion!

    Mike,
I like the new crop a lot.. actually both versions. For aspens especially I tend to think in terms of a vertical layout to play in to the strengths of the verticals. I have shot many 3 frame panos in a vertical orientation for the aspens they always seem to work out. Thanks for posting this. Regards,
    Dean
