I hadn't even realized this. Apparently they had kept it somewhat quiet?

    From todays paper..

Graffiti at Canyonlands National Park’s False Kiva led to the alcoves closure on July 20, KSL-TV reports.

The kiva will remained closed until the National Park Service develops a plan for the site in the coming months. The trail to the alcove remains open and visitors can still view the kiva from a distance.

As of Aug. 22, the Southeast Utah Group of the National Park Service had not yet responded to local media requests for more information.

This is horrible! Why on earth are they not giving the media more information. Getting news about this out to the general public is the best way to catch the idiots that vandalized it.

I hadn't heard about it either. Haven't been there in years, but it was getting way too popular with cairns every 3' on the trail. People.....!

Here is a more detailed article.

Jim, If you recall, there was/is a current member over on FM who could not resist posting detailed maps to the Kiva in some posting several years ago. And she did it out of spite, thinking that EVERYONE should know where these sites are - without having any real interest in them or learning how to protect them and behave responsibly when visiting them. Fred, fortunately immediately removed her post. That was the absolute last time I ever talked to that person. And also the last time I ever mentioned in any photo posting where a location is, regardless of whether it's well known or not.I wish people would think more about the consequences of their actions... I think just about every site out here has had an increase in direct vandalism over the last 10 years. I attribute a lot to the power of the internet...

Stupidity is an epidemic in this country. And now authorized and approved by the government.
