Blueberries and huckleberries put on a big show in the West Virginia highlands, and one of the prime locations is Bear Rocks Preserve, a Nature Conservancy preserve on the edge of Dolly Sods. Bear Rocks is the rim of the Allegheny Front (separating the Potomac and Ohio River watersheds), and the interplay of rocks and vegetation extends back from the rim a good ways. It is a well-know spot and is inundated with tourists and casual photographers in the fall, with people crawling all over the rocks and completely overwhelming the parking. They key to shooting there is to be there on a weekday, so you only have to clone out a dozen or so people! Fortunately, since I live in the area now I can visit during the off times.

This year the color on the berry bushes never reached a uniform peak, but there were particular locations with good color at any given time. This is the best display I found with good light, a warm glow about 20 minutes after sunset. The wider panorama represents about 180 degrees. The smaller one is a crop for composition, focusing on the best part of the scene.

I have sized these to be best viewed by clicking through to the gallery view for a full page view.

Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

This is lovely and very different. I think I prefer the uncropped version.

What a cool view Dave! Those reds are just so awesome and inviting. I think I lean towards the cropped version.

Beautiful colors and I love the contrast of the white rocks with the reds of the berry bushes. Hard to choose between the copped and pano versions so I will just appreciate both of them.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the preferences for the full or cropped version. Looks like they both have their merits!

Beautiful scenery, i prefer the second image, too bad the arch in the clouds is little cut off.

    Cheers.

I thought of this thread when I saw this news story:

Expert Hiker Found Dead at Bottom of Appalachian Trail Embankment 5 Days After going Missing

Pennsylvania authorities discovered Michael Kaiser’s body at the bottom of a 30-foot embankment on Thursday in an area known as Bear Rocks, according to WPVI-TV.

Thanks, Lionking and frkiii. Different Bear Rocks, though if I had stepped back a few feet the results would have been similar. Sorry to hear about a fellow hiker.

Uncropped for me. The inclusion of the 2 trees at the RHS stop my eyes. It also sets up a "story" between the two sets of two trees staring at each other perhaps ready to fight. I know that I am being a touch fanciful with the last comment. Ken
