Soaring in Camarillo

I got a new toy to place with, the new Sony A6400 which was released last Thursday. I took some time out from shopping at the Outlet mall in Camarillo California to shoot some airplanes at sunset that were flying into the airport that is right next to it.

I will write up a first impressions thread on it later, but for now here is one of the shots from it. Depending on where I shot the airplanes as they approached I could get puffy clouds or I could get dramatic moody clouds. This one is as it's approaching so I have some cool puffy clouds.

Thanks Ben! There is even a little motion on the prop. This was one of my first shots of the plane as it looped and did some practice landings. So the prop blur wasn't intestinal, but I think it looks cool. I spent about 30 minutes shooting planes, so later on I did purposely slow the shutter speed to get motion on the prop, but in this one I was just lucky.

At least at this scale the prop on this plane almost looks like it's stopped instead of having motion blur. What are you using for a lens?

Yeah, I agree this scale makes it hard to see so it's probably a mute point for the most part since while I did want to shoot the planes, combining them with the clouds is what I was really after. So this might even be more of a cloudscape then a Transportation shot.

I just got the basic lenses with it for now. I bought it with the 16-50mm kit lens. And then Best Buy had an open box of the 55-210mm (which is often put in with the 16-50mm for a kit set up) that I got almost $100 off. Ideally I think for something like this that's going to be more of a toy and I hate to use that word, but I am not expecting it to match my D850. So I will at some point probably get the 18-135mm or the 18-200mm so that I can have an all in one lens and not have to deal with switching lenses so much. That 50mm break off with a zoom lens is a pain in the butt for me. But I will get into all of that in my write up.

Oh, so anyway, this was with the 55-210mm at around the 160 to 170mm range. I backed off from full in to include the clouds. The lens does seem pretty sharp, so that's good.

I like combination.

Nice capture Jim. I take a lot of airplane pictures off my back deck. They usually don't come out all that clear like yours.
