Need belt holster ideas

Well I ordered the Think Tank Steroid speed belt and digital holster 20 for a start. I hope I find a good way to wear it under my parka, otherwise it will require removal to get to stuff under the parka. I will see how it works without a harness before I order one. A single strap harness has a of of appeal, but if it needs more support I will go for the full harness. A lens pouch for my 11-24 would be my last item.

I am not doing much photography now until spring so may not get much chance to try it out.

The holster and belt arrived and worked fine for my 5DSR with a 24-70 f2.8 attached. The shoulder strap that comes with the holster works as a strap when attached to the belt so I don't see an immediate need to buy a harness yet.

I then purchased a changing bag LC75. I went for the biggest one because it is big enough to hold my 11-24 lens, and with the foot removed my 100-400.

I have not been out to try it in the field yet, but it fits ok and goes over my parka fine. I have a sling strap for my tripod and that will work with the waist belt and the changing bag and holster. The entire setup with tripod is 15 pounds, or 10 pounds without the tripod.

The fit is tight on the camera and also on the 11-24.

  • Jim and others wanted to see pictures, so here ya go.
The kit on the floor with the 100-400 and 11-24 outside the changing bag and the camera in the holster.

Same but with the 100-400 in the changing bag

Now the 11-24 is in the changing bag

Here I am wearing it. My wife says the glare from my head may blind you though

The sling will help a lot when the 100-400mm is along. I actually use my 100-400mm in the LC75 bag with the support foot installed. Kinda tight but it fits.

Do you have a plate on the foot? I mostly use the 100-400 hand held but I carry the foot in my vest in case I need to do a landscape.

Yes - it's set up for the manfrotto mount plate system. Here is a quick shot of the 100-400mm in the case and one showing my whole belt with the suspenders

The full belt as I use it has 2 LC35s and a 1 R-U-Thirsty water bottle bag and the other side has the LC75 and a small bag with extra batteries, memory cards, filters, and rag for wiping off lenses.

FWIW this belt has seen a lot of miles at this point and has been in use for 9 years now. I have had to replace the suspender system once and they improved the design for exactly what failed on my old one.

Thanks for the photos Alan. I am a two lens guy and can carry all my other stuff in my vest. I might get a filter pouch however. Another 5 months until photo season, but then I will see if I need a harness. I like that this strap can sling on from none side. Getting into a full harness is a pain.

I am thinking long term toward a mirrorless system when Canon announces a 5DSR version.

Not sure if the mirrorless system is in the cards for me at this point. Imaging Resource had an interesting interview with the Canon USA president that left me feeling like mirrorless isn't really going to replace DSLRs soon at all.

Thanks for that link Alan. I guess I was thinking of Canon Rumors who rumor that the replacement for the 5DS R will be more MP and mirrorless. I guess a real Canon guy ought to be more reliable as a source.

Hey Ben, when it comes to mirrorless, it doesn't really matter if it's "replacing" a DSLR or not. The important thing I would think is if the Mirrorless camera fits your needs then get it. Whether a DSLR that's similar is still being produced shouldn't matter.

Some features I look forward to are GPS, tilting LCD, WIFI, more dr, and focus peaking. A few more pixels would be nice but not mandatory.
