The Devil's Spine

This is a very different look to this area and I like it. Do you have multiple converted IR camera bodies? You note this one as 590nm while an earlier post had a 720nm filter.

Hi Alan, Thanks !!!

The Nikon D70S was my first IR modded camera and it was modded to 720nm, and had it for almost 10yrs then sold that
then I bought an Olympus E-PL6 which I bought from Kolari Vision and they'd modded it to Dual Spectrum, which
allows you to use different filters on the Lens, but the down side to that is you have to buy different filters and
also different sizes if you use more than one lens. With the Oly I mainly used the 590nm Filter which renders Golden Foliage
and Blue Skies, but can be post processed to many different looks.

Also, with the Dual Spectrum you can buy a "Hot Mirror Filter" which
almost takes it back to a normal visible light camera and with just a tweak to the White Balance it's very hard to tell it's not a normal camera. The Dual Spectrum filters out UV Light but allows IR and Visible light to come through.

There's also a Full Spectrum Mod which allows all bands of light to enter, UV, IR, Visible light. There's a lot of Shooter's
using UV filters these days which render some very neat and interesting results !!! Plus all the IR Wavelengths, plus the
Hot Mirror Filter to get back close to normal visible light.

I've since then sold that and bought another Modded Camera from Kolari Vision this time got a Sony a6300 mirrorless to
the 590nm wavelength , which bring me to the camera that I used for this shot.

Sorry for all the Rambling, Take Care,

Craig

Thanks for the explanation and don't apologize for the rambling at all. I had been staring at the Life Pixel site to convert a Canon 5D Mk II I have on the shelf but I need to take a long hard look at Kolari Vision first now. Thanks for the info.

Hey Craig, I have spent many an hour wandering around that spine at Shiprock. I have shot some of the other spines that come out from it too, it's a really interesting place that surprisingly from it's ease of access doesn't get a lot of people there.

I like your angle on this, capturing that cool texture of the spine. And the look of this is cool, it's almost normal looking but not quite.

And I definitely appreciate the explanation of your IR and what you are shooting. I do have an old D70s that I have thought about converting, but the shutter acts up from time to time, so I don't want to spend money on a camera where the shutter is about to die. You should like you have lot's of flexibility with your current system, but to start I would probably go with the simpler approach like you did. Maybe I can pick up an old D700 and get it converted.

Hi Jim, Thanks so very much, it was a place that I'd been wanting to see and shoot for a long time and you're right about it being
Very Accessible, which kind of surprised me. It just has such a special feel to it as does most of the Southwest. I'd really like to have gotten
Closer to Shiprock Mtn but the Wife was getting a little antsy so I didn't want to wear out my good luck ;-)

There's a lot of very good candidates for IR Mods, and I'll bet a full frame modded D700 would produce some wonderful images.
I've also seen some very good results from the D7200 models.

Thanks again, Take Care,

Craig
