This isn't Bisti Badlands in New Mexico, but it's not far from it. I had been up late shooting stars the night before and so when I woke before dawn and looked outside it was pretty cloudy and easy to talk myself into staying wrapped up in my sleeping bag. But the "What ifs" started nagging at me and for the next half hour it was a fitful sleep. The "What ifs" finally got me going, so I got up and saw that there just might be an opening on the horizon for the sun to poke through... I was still probably a mile and half from where I wanted to shoot, so getting ready as fast as possible, and throwing about 40lbs of camera gear on.
I ran/walked through the sometimes sandy sometimes rocky desert. When I was about a half mile from where I wanted to shoot the sunrise, the colors started to make themselves known in the clouds. I quickly realized that even with running I was not going to make it. But I ran anyway looking for some compositions as I was in the middle of a sandy scrub area with nothing much of interest. As I kept going, I saw some Hoodoo's and rocks that the day before I had passed without much of a thought, but this morning as the color was starting to go nuclear I knew I had to make some of those elements work, because I wasn't going to get any further before the color would start fading too much.
Here is one of the shots I was able to get. All comments are welcome.
