Eruption!

I recently had a most exception life experience, I flew in a helicopter to photograph the erupting volcano in Iceland. We got very close and hovered just above it. We also landed closely to make ground based images. This was the evening of the first night arriving there and even though the next nine days in the Iceland highlands were also wonderful, this heart racing event was top of the list. And it's not easy to get good captures, in fact it is quite difficult. Fortunately we had a full hour booked so we circled and crossed the spewing fissure many times. I was glad to have successfully set my camera properly for this type of photography before taking off. I can't believe I got some keepers. I still have many to work on but this was a good start....

Great job on these Jeffrey. What an amazing experience!

I bet once you are in the air, there is probably 1000 possibilities, but only a few that really stand out. And since you aren't flying the helicopter yourself, that's got to be a bit of work to fly up there, look down on it taking a few minutes, but you can't take too long, to see where the lava flow lines up for some great photos?

I look forward to seeing your other Iceland images, but I can't imagine topping this.

I am insanely jealous of your experience on this trip - I would absolutely love to shoot something like this. Beautiful images and the contrast of the glowing lava against the darkness surrounding it is fantastic.

Nicely done! Very cool images. I got to fly in a helicopter over an eruption in Hawaii in high school and will always remember it fondly. Most of all I remember how hot the lava felt even from a helicopter.
