Best of 2023

My photo year was mostly quite local but I did get some worthwhile captures. I did far more aerial photography this last year than DSLR work but got lots of new perspectives on things I have been shooting for years on the ground.

1. Starting the new year off - a magnificent sunrise on January 2 from 300' above my house:

2. Rare summer thunderheads over the Vancouver area. Had some fun shooting with a telephoto lens into the colors and shapes of the clouds without reference to the ground:

3. Some fun cloud colors over Mt. St. Helens in early fall. 2 shot panorama suing a 166mm lens on my drone.

4. Early fall colors in the Columbia River Gorge. This one may end up on a wall and might be one of the best shots I have ever scored in the Gorge. I honestly didn't spot the birds below me when I was descending my drone for this low point of view over the lake. I was looking at how the reflection of Crown Point was in the frame when the egret showed up. It circled over me once and then flew away while I squeezed off the shot.

5. A scene along the North Fork of the Siuslaw River. A very soggy day with some nice light.

6. A very lovely day along Sweet Creek showing off some of the fall colors.

7. A view of Beacon Rock in the distance with Young Creek winding through the foreground.

8. Another perspective of Beacon Rock and the fall colors of Rooster Rock State Park.

9. Multnomah Falls at peak fall color as seen from 380' above the Columbia River:

10. An amazing sunrise with the shadow of Mt. Hood projecting across the sunrise colors:

Very nice and varied set of images. Hard to choose favorites, I like them all.
Thanks Jameel - interestingly I shot more photos (over 12,000) this last year than the previous 4 years combined in spite of not really traveling much. I guess I spent more time flying and shooting than driving and that wasn't a Bad Thing(TM) :)

You didn't get out as much last year as you normally do Alan, but you still managed to get some great photos! I will get back to this later.

Thanks Jim - it helps to have a place like the Columbia River Gorge so close to home. I think I paid more attention to the details of the Gorge this year than I have in the past and it paid off.

You have broken my 'pick a favorite' algorithm! Good grief! Your drone work makes me really realize the potential of that type of photography, even as I contemplate selling my own drone (long story). All are strong, but to single out a few specifically:

#2 is simply my favorite cloud only image I have ever seen anywhere - so simple yet so powerfully executed. Shape and color come together for such a sublime capture. #4 is special, I am not sure you could have placed a bird in the scene manually any more perfectly, it looks like it is enjoying the same wonderful view you are sharing with us. And I imagine you could wait a number of years before getting that fantastic capture in #10 - that is something else!

Thanks Mike - I am pretty sure #4 is going to find a spot on one of my walls. That's one of the best shots I have ever scored in the Gorge.
