A total bust

Ever have one of those photos trips that you plan meticulously for, but then something happens and it all goes to hell? It happened to me in April. I spoke on the phone to a park ranger at White Sands NP, asking about when the yucca blooms started appearing and planned dates based on that. Well, a few weeks later when we arrived and saw no yucca yet in bloom we got a bit discouraged, but tried to make the best of the conditions we got. Then the winds started. While the official reports read 15-20 mph winds, it seemed on the ground to be at least twice that. The gusts almost floored me more than once. You can't fight Mother Nature. This is the best I could do - each of these photos are 4-6 images focus stacked.

Hey Michael,

Sand dunes are not a fun place to be when it's windy. And when it's really windy, it's time to pack it up as the last thing we want is sand getting it's way into our lenses. I am glad you came away with these.

I really like what you came away with. I know when I was in White Sands a month or so ago I didn't really see any Yucca in bloom either. I like your first 2 the best. #3 is a great image to show that wind that was blowing.

Ditto from the other comments Michael. My only confusion was to try and imagine it being sand and not snow :). In my world snow looks quite similar when drifting.

You came away with really nice images. The wind would wipe away footprints. I don't know if it's true, but I think of yuccas blooming in summer rather than spring.
