We woke up late to a nice sunrise starting. I got up and made coffee, but didn't think it would amount to much. Just when I was pouring my cup it peaked and I hurried to get the drone up. Shoulda waited on the coffee - I missed the best of it, but the left overs were still nice.

The serendipity finding a nice unexpected sunset with my drone a couple days ago got me psyched to fly more. When a few clouds looked a bit promising I figured I might as well take er up again since I can just take off from my backyard and shoot up for a view. When I first looked out the window...
The morning fog hid most of the sunrise clouds from my house, but I could see a bit of color developing up high so I launched the drone since it only takes a couple of minutes to deploy.

I was flying my drone around Mt. Pilchuck yesterday morning when the clouds started to build. I saw a glory rainbow forming above me, so I flew out and framed the mountain with the rainbow as an accent. It was incredible having the ability to place the camera where I wanted it to capture this...
I was a bit bummed to find a group of young people already camped in Mt. Pilchuck's summit lookout on a Monday evening, but I know a good spot on a side ridge where I headed to drop my sleeping bag. Worked out great in the end - a new perspective, and the kids scrambled out onto the ridge...
I did a quick hike up to Lake 22 in the Cascades near my house yesterday. A well packed trail meant I didn't need snowshoes, but micro-spikes were very nice for the icy descent. I brought the drone and got a great view over the ridge and up to the summit of Mt. Pilchuck.

We took advantage of the only government shutdown benefit I can think of - the forest service didn't have the $ to shut down the road to Mt. Pilchuck yet so we managed to drive all the way to the trailhead parking lot for a rare easy winter climb. Due to recent rain then freeze cycles the snow...
Nine shots (3 rows of 3) with my Sony A7rII resulted in this 2.5 GB pano - morning view east to Glacier Pk. from the top of Mt. Pilchuck. Click through to see larger.

I hiked up my little local peak Monday with a heavy pack filled with photo gear to spend the night. I lucked out having the lookout to myself (other than a noisy mouse). My star time lapse failed when my A7rII, which I'd left out on a tripod ready for an 11 PM start time, gave an error when I...
Since getting a new drone I've been excited to use it's unique perspective. Of course like everyone I wanted to get a shot of my own house, but didn't want to zip around in the middle of the day bothering the neighbors, or giving them concerns about their privacy (and I won't be doing that in...
Another hike up my closest little peak just before the first rains of the fall season started. I was mainly there to try out my new drone, but was glad I brought my Sony A7rII with 24-104mm also for these earthbound shots.

Mt. Pilchuck is the easiest access mountain to my home near Everett WA. For many years my friends and I did "dusk patrols" - after work runs up in the spring, skiing down with the sunset. Sadly they gate the 6 mile road to the trailhead now in the winter and don't open it again until all the...
